Dear List,
I’ve been sitting back watching this discussion unfold. I too feel that there is the underlying issue of competency between the BOC and ABC practitioners. I too know of several outstanding BOC practitioners and several unqualified ABC practitioners.
I personally don’t like the deal as it stands because of the fact that the BOC is still going to be operating even after the influx of practitioners to ABC. Somewhere along the line, that will need to be dealt with and hopefully corrected. If somehow the BOC went out of business so to speak, it’s a great deal. However if we’re just allowing them to “reload”, what was the point??
Mr. Friddle has pointed out the need for the alternative pathways to certification. I firmly agree with that stand as I went the 10 year pathway to extend my title. I did go to Shelby State and took the classes; I had ran out of time having an Associates degree. I do feel that education is important, but the OTJT is just as important. One of the things that stuck out during my Orthotics CPM exam was the examiner saying that it will take 5 years of practice before you are really competent. I agree with that totally. I’ve worked with freshly certified people-it can be scary too. Some of the best that the ABC has were under-educated and had taken the short term courses. They're reaching retirement age and some have already added the (E) to their title.
The last thing that I think should be taken notice of is that this is something that cannot be taken back. Once the gate has opened and we have allowed the BOC members to join our organization, we MUST accept them with open arms and welcome them. The bottom line is that we want to make sure that the patients are cared for by competent people and not someone off the street such as sales reps. It’s the OTJT that also separates the good from the bad.
This is to ABC: Somewhere there has to be either a deadline on this offer or just allow the BOC to be the examiners and ABC just another association.
