To my esteemed colleagues,
Yes the ABC/BOC mess is important, but if I may regress and ask the list
for some technical help. I have a patient who is a 70 year old man from
Morocco. He came in with a BK prosthesis consisting of a shoulder
harness suspension, leather thigh lacer with side joints, and an aluminum
BK section attached to a single axis foot. The socket consisted of a
custom leather inner socket that floated on the top of the apparently
prefabricated aluminum shin section. He had waited for 1 1/2 years to
receive the leg and it was causing pressure sores on the superior medial
aspect of the knee and anterior distal tibia. His son told me that this
is the state of the art in prosthetic legs in Morocco and that he was
interested in what we could do here. Since he had no insurance, it was
to be made as inexpensively as possible. I tested his knees and muscle
strength and decided to try him on a silicone liner with pin lock and a
veriflex foot, all of which I had used componentry and donated. He has
been wearing the prosthesis for 2 months now and is doing fine. I have
found a few used silicone liners (sized 28), and Ossur has sent me one
new one to give him at no charge. I want to send him home with a few
more liners and am asking the list members if anyone has any good 28
comfort or dermo liners with pin umbrella that I could have. Also he is
wearing a veriflex 27 Right. Any decent used foot shells out there?
The other question is regarding perspiration. I suspect that his
perspiration will decrease over the next few months but does anyone have
any suggestions regarding reducing the perspiration inside the liner. It
can get up to over 115 degrees in the summer there. I believe that I
have heard of some antiperspirant that is ok to use in the liners. Any
ideas? Other than that, he is proof that there are wonderful people in
Arab countries who still really love the USA. His leg is laminated with
stars and stripes per his request. Thanks for any help.
