THE POSITION OF THE AMERICAN ACADEMY OF ORTHOTISTS AND PROSTHETISTS ON THE RECENT DISCONTINUATION OF THE ABC / BOC UNIFICATION NEGOTIATIONS (adopted by the Board of Directors, March 5, 2004):
The Academy Board of Directors shares in the disappointment of many of our colleagues in learning yesterday about the discontinuation of the unification negotiations between the ABC and the BOC. Last November, the Academy Board approved a position statement supporting the concept of unification, recognizing the need for a spectrum of training levels for individuals providing orthotic and prosthetic care. We are confident that our ABC colleagues who accepted the responsibility of negotiating with the BOC to unify into a single, national credentialing body, were sincere and open in their approach.
The Academy Board now finds itself in the challenging position of needing to deliberate on how this development may impact our members, and our existing membership categories, as defined by our bylaws. To allow this process to take place, the Academy Board has adopted a resolution placing a 90-day moratorium on accepting new members within the association, effective immediately. We are obligated to study this issue in a thoughtful and objective way, and this action simply serves as a mechanism to facilitate this important process, with the best interest of the Academy membership and the profession in mind.
