I am a student of prosthetics at Northwestern University. As part of our upper-extremity curriculum, we've been asked to determine prosthetic options for a hypothetical situation. We've presented options to our instructors and have been advised now to go beyond our student minds and consult those with experiences much like the one below.
Any experiences, suggestions or availability of components would be much appreciated.

Dx: Left 10cm (axilla-distal) trans-humeral amputation.
Treatment Plan: Provide prosthesis for ADL's and work environment (sanitary engineer).
The hypothetical gentleman is a 35 year old male who suffered a degloving injury on the job resulting in spontaneous left TH amputation and subsequent brachial plexus stretching. The distal end of the residual limb is closed via skin graft from the thigh.
Active ROM is limited to an unknown degree in flexion due to pain. MMT is 3+ in flexion, 4- abduction, 4 extension. The gentleman is concerned how his family will view him and has requested no hook be used. He gets to and from work via motorcycle and wishes to continue doing so.

We have researched various body-powered, external-powered & hybrid systems as well as motorcycle modifications and TD adaptations. At this point, we could learn from clinicians, patients and vendors and their successful or failed anecdotes involving any available or custom systems.

I will post a summary of responses. Please indicate if you request anonymity.

Thanks in advance for your input.

Sincerely,

Wilder LaFond
Northwestern University
