For the person who appreciates the myriad choices from an extensive menu the Academy's Annual Meeting will be a delight. With the addition of more scientific society programs and product display showcases the number of education sessions has grown to 130 valued at 79.5 PCE credits!
ACADEMY'S ANNUAL MEETING TAKES ON INTERNATIONAL FLAIR - Registrants from 11 countries and several international speakers will broaden the horizons for participants in New Orleans.
LIVE FROM AUSTRALIA - Every practitioner deals with the challenges associated with obese patients and the complications created when they exceed the weight limit for heavy-duty componentry. Bill Contayannis will present data on specific product failures and discuss the options via a live video hook-up via satellite from Monash University in Australia.
WHAT'S NEW WITH MICROPROCESSOR KNEES - A stellar panel will include: Dale Berry, CPO, chairman of a Microprocessor Knee Symposium co-hosted last May by the Academy and Walter Reed Army Medical Center (WRAMC), and Joseph Miller, CP, the chief prosthetist at Walter Reed, Dr Maryann Miknevich, Chief of the Amputee Clinic at Mercy Hospital (Pittsburgh, PA) and Fred Downs, top administrator of the Department of Veteran Affairs Prosthetic and Sensory Aids Service. The panel will discuss what was learned at the Forum held on microprocessor knee technology, including a Patient Evaluation Protocol Form (which was published in the most recent issue of the JPO). Additionally, Endolite is conducting a technical workshop on the Latest Innovation in Microprocessor Knee Control and OSSUR will offer a certification workshop on the new OSSUR Microprocessor Knee that already has 60 people registered.
ACPOC TEAM TO PRESENT - Dr. Kenneth Guidera and Dulcey Lima, CO, OTR/L will lead a team of presenters in an instructional course covering current trends in pediatric orthotics including both upper and lower extremity prescriptions.
MANAGEMENT OF THE AMPUTEE ATHLETE - Robert Gailey, PhD, PT, previous winner of the Thranhardt Lecture Series honorarium, Kurt Collier, CP and Rock Stapleton, CP will share best practices in treating this special category of patients. They will also cover the modern components, socket designs, materials, and techniques that have helped improve the performance of amputee athletes and reduced injuries.
SPECIAL PREVIEW OF CSOP #2 FINDINGS - Co-chairs Dr. Doug Smith and Gary Berke, MS, CP, FAAOP will summarize the work of 17 experts that met to document Clinical Standards of Practice on the Post-Operative Management of the Lower Extremity Amputee. The findings will soon be published as a supplement to the JPO.
