To my esteemed colleagues,
I have a woman in her early fifties who has been diabetic for several
years. She has had the typical diabetic foot problems that have resulted
in a partial foot amputation and history of ulsers. She has a fallen
navicular on one side and we have been providing Trumold custom diabetic
shoes for several years. Last year, she had a kidney and pancreas
transplant that has been very successful. She is no longer diagnosed as
a diabetic because the new pancreas is producing insulin and her sugar is
controlled through diet. She has been covered by private insurance in
the past and they have covered the shoes. She will be on Medicare as
primary insurance starting sometime next year and I do not believe that
Medicare will cover diabetic shoes for her, since she is no longer
diabetic. But she has the partial foot amputation and the neuropathy and
other related problems that were a direct result of the diabetes. Anyone
else had this experience and anyone know whether Medicare would still
cover the shoes? Thanks.
