List,
Thank you for all of the replies. It seems that the bad mouthing is far
more common than I had realized. I will summarize the responses from
the professionals on this list. The responses ranged from: do nothing,
keep your nose clean, and the good guys will win all the way to...sue
the pants off them including pain suffering, loss of time, wages, mental
anguish, loss of sleep, sexual dysfunction, etc. etc. Somewhere in the
middle (and by far the most responses) suggested contacting a lawyer and
having a firm letter written or at least prepared incase things develop
further. We really do not want any sort of legal battle. We don't have
the time, energy, or dollars to put up a big stink. We would just
prefer the comments and attacks to stop. We will likely remain calm
throughout the end of the year. It is getting rather hard to bite our
tongues each week when we hear yet another ridiculous comment. At our
one year anniversary, should this continue, we will likely have the
letter written.
What I have found is that actual slander is hard to prove without some
firm evidence. We do have some written communication that is rather
incriminating, but the majority would be labeled hearsay. We also fear
coming across as whiners should we pursue something very aggressive.
We could also be looked at as kicking them when they're down because
some more of the staff has left and the company has other problems to
deal with. There is no need to kick them, but a tight zipper across the
lips would be nice.
The majority of your responses helped even if to just send words of
encouragement. There seems to be quite a bit of support for the little
guys these days who have taken the leap to entrepreneurship. Thank
You!!
