To my esteemed colleagues,
I am fabricating a knee disarticulation prosthesis for a woman who is
about 55 years old and who has, for the past 30 years, successfully worn
a leather socket with laces in the front, side joints welded to
endoskeletal components and a SAFE foot. We have discussed the options
that are presently available for a new prosthesis and she will only use
the leather one with side joints, since it has worked so well for quite a
long time. I made her present one about 10 years ago and used Otto Bock
BK side joints shaped under and welded onto a male pyramid plate that
accepts a standard female clamp adaptor. Below that is a tube and sach
foot adaptor attached to the SAFE foot.
So far, I have duplicated her old socket without laces because she has
not opened the laces for several years. She has taped the inside of the
old leg with duct tape to tighten and seal the seams and has created a
suction fit that works remarkably well with only a nylon stocking
interface. I duplicated that and eliminated the laces. I am now at the
point where I need to design the knee and shin section and want to stay
with endoskeletal for adjustability, weight and a better choice of feet.
I have an Otto Bock 5R4 adaptor for a Habermann Interim Prosthesis that I
have planned to attach to side hinges, but before I go that route, I
wanted to ask if anyone has any other suggestions for a knee shin setup
for this application. I have thought of using either the Becker or
Fillauer stance control knee joints, but she has never had an instability
problem (it's set up pretty stable) so I'm not sure. Any suggestions
would be helpful, and I can post them later for your amusement. Thanks
to all.
