National Disability Employment Awareness Month

The National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR)
in the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services of the
U.S. Department of Education supports a variety of projects in its
Employment Outcomes research area. Major contributors in this area are
NIDRR's Rehabilitation Research and Training Centers (RRTC). Following
are some recent research findings from two RRTCs with a focus on
employment outcomes.
* VCU-RRTC on Workplace Supports
* RTC on Community Rehabilitation Programs to Improve Employment
Outcomes

inhibit or enhance the employment rate and career advancement of people

**** * An investigation was completed with 46 HR professionals to learn
their perceptions of barriers to employment for individuals with
disabilities, and organizational policies and procedures as they pertain
to disability in the workplace.

**** * A study of front-line supervisors in business included a survey
of 255 supervisors of employees with known disabilities about their
experiences with employees with disabilities in their work units.

**** * This article on the Progression of Disability Benefits documents
and describes the experiences of workers with work-limiting disabilities
as they move through a system of economic disability benefits by
examining the phases of short-term, long-term and Social Security
disability compensation.

Research and Training Center on Community Rehabilitation Programs to
Improve Employment Outcomes

The goals of the Research and Training Center are to define, promote,
and help community-based rehabilitation programs (CRPs) provide
employment-related services that demonstrate important employment
outcomes for individuals with disabilities. Three recently completed
studies are presented.
**** * A national study was conducted to identify consistencies in
services and experiences of individuals with disabilities or other
barriers to achieve employment.

Johnson, P. (2003). Service models and outcomes: Evidence for
community-based practices. In D. L. Hagen-Foley & F. E. Menz (Eds.),

Wisconsin-Stout, Stout Vocational Rehabilitation Institute, Research and
Training Centers.
**** * A series of studies with the Employment Outcomes Instrument
(EOI) has documented the importance of non-vocational outcomes for
sustaining a person in the community as well as in employment.
