The Board for Orthotist/Prosthetist Certification (BOC) and the American Board for Certification in Orthotics and Prosthetics (ABC) have agreed to enter into formal negotiations for the purpose of exploring the formation of a new unified credentialing organization. Such negotiations by their nature must be conducted in private so that full and honest discussion and negotiations can take place. Therefore, the parties have agreed to hold confidential sessions, out of the view of the public.
BOC firmly believes that, in the long run, the O&P profession is too small to support two separate credentialing bodies but recognizes that the public’s access to competent practitioners is a key principle in these negotiations. Please note that during these negotiations, BOC is determined to protect your rights as a BOC certificant.
Given the many issues to be addressed in our negotiations, no timetable can be given as to when unification will occur, if at all. Nevertheless, we are committed to doing our best to arrive at a consensus in the first half of 2004. We expect to notify you of any material developments in our negotiations, including the parties reaching a definitive agreement to unify.
We ask that all parties withhold judgment as these negotiations go forward. BOC does not rule out the possibility of asking members of the practitioner and education community, as well as the public-at-large to participate in an appropriate manner.
