To my esteemed colleagues,
Today I was asked to see an 8 month old boy with a congenital foot
deformity. I was told that it was a symes amputation. The right foot is
normal but the left foot is quite small, about 1/2 the size of the right.
It appears to have fairly normal bone formation, except smaller, and,
although toes are present, there doesn't appear to be boney connections
between the toes and the mets, which are also complete, but small. The
child is now starting to stand and seems to do fine. The physician
really didn't know what she wanted me to do, but mom said that when she
puts a shoe on, it falls off. At this point, I suggested to mom that we
do nothing and see how he does when he really starts walking, but I would
like to make some suggestion regarding shoes. Any ideas? I have
included 3 photos. Thanks.
