Dear Justin,
While I find the opinions you expressed interesting, I have a few
questions about what you wrote. I can tell from the tone in which you
wrote this piece that something inspired you to do so. I'm curious as to
who or what was your inspiration.
I do agree that on certain days, I would side with you. I'm young and
idealistic. I entered the field for its unique nature and usefulness to
my fellow man. I suspect you joined on similar ideals.
But, I find the majority of what you wrote quite petty. Example: (this
is not meant to be offensive to brace reps, I got a very nice reply from
one assuring that they are not all from the same mold - it IS meant to be
offensive to certain orthotists!) Which is probably why you got some
childish replies about your lack of credentials. I am sure as a human
being you realize that everyone is different and thus trying to group
people into some stereotypical greedy health care provider is rather
silly.
And as for, Most people want to be rich, but it is not fair to take
advantage of the captive audience which we work with every day. What? I
remember the first thing people told me about the orthotic and prosthetic
field was don't expect to be rich. Do it because you love it. Yes, I
know there are a few wealthy O&P providers out there and in most instances
they have worked quite hard to achieve their wealth. However, the majority
of us seem to be hard working men and women who aren't looking for the
kind of material gains you speak of. And I believe that this is what
makes this field so unique. At every facility I have worked at, I have
met some of the most caring and self-sacrificing people. Not these gougers
you refered to.
You have recieved a great deal of informed, intellectual replies on this
subject. I'm sure you will learn from them, as I have. I am glad to see
that you had the courage to post your honest opinion. Always be honest. If
people are going to judge you by a silly comment on a list-serv, then I
don't think you really wanted to work with them to begin with. I wish you
luck in your future endeavors.
