Tony makes a very good point about the state of our profession. I am
very proud of our profession and have enjoyed success over the past 25
years. I have been involved in the Washington State licensing effort
both with the state legislature and the current licensing committe of the
department of health. Licensing in Washington has helped contain the
Physicial Therapist's goal to add O & P to their National Practice Act,
which would add O & P to their licensing scope of practice in ALL states
in the US. That is their goal. In Washington, at least so far, we have
convinced the state legislature that PTs do not have the education and
training to provide O & P care. They certainly do have the education and
experience to provide training, and, if their practice act is accepted in
most states that don't have a strong O & P presence in the respective
legislatures, they will be the only professionals in those states who
have licenses to provide O & P care. As we bicker amongst ourselves, we
may be losing the battle. In order for our profession to grow and remain
valid, we do need to be educated and licensed.
