1. What are the current protocols for HALO pin care? Are there published
sources of protocols that you are aware of? My understanding from multiple
sources is 50/50 Hydrogen Peroxide/Saline, but have a hospital that is
questioning the peroxide.
2. I will be placing a HALO on an adult with Cerebral Palsy following a
cervical fusion. The patient's entire body (neck included) goes into very
forceful spasms when he tries to speak, or gets agitated (football games
really get him going). My question is: would you use 8 pins to hold him more
securely or leave it at 4 so that you have somewhere else to place
replacement pins should they loosen or become infected due to loosening?
I'm leaning toward 8 to avoid catastrophic failure of the pins coming loose
and migrating up or off the skull.
3. Who makes good silicone partial foot prostheses, ankle/shin high with a
split toe? Zipper or slipper? Price is a factor as well for patient with
poor funding.
Thank you for the help.
