This Week is Contact Your Congressmen Week
The O&P community dodged a huge bullet last week as the U.S. House and
Senate dropped a 10-year freeze in the Medicare O&P Fee Schedule from
the tax legislation scheduled to be signed by the President today.
But the agreement to drop these provisions (along with a DME freeze, a
co-payment for lab services, and a reduction in reimbursement for
Medicare drugs) from the tax bill virtually assures that they will be
put back in play throughout June as the House and Senate mark-up and
pass Medicare reforms and add a prescription drug benefit.
Also in play is a proposal to implement nationwide competitive bidding
for all Medicare DME, off-the-shelf orthotics and medical supplies.
What combination of these proposals will end up in the final Medicare
bill this year is anyone's guess at this point.
Congress is out of session this week for Memorial Day recess. That
means that many of your representatives are in their home states and
districts.
IF YOU'VE NEVER CONTACTED YOUR CONGRESSMAN OR SENATORS, THIS WEEK IS THE
TIME TO DO IT! NAAOP will post a reminder to contact your Members of
Congress on Thursday and Friday to encourage you to make the contact!
NAAOP implores you to ACT TODAY, TOMORROW, or FRIDAY!
IT IS ABSOLUTELY CRITICAL THAT MEMBERS OF CONGRESS HEAR FROM YOU, THEIR
CONSTITUENTS, WHILE THEY'RE AT HOME.
The message to your representatives is simple:
. A Medicare fee freeze until 2013 is totally unreasonable and
will decimate the O&P field, both providers and patients alike, and
. All O&P care should be exempt from Medicare competitive bidding
because you can't competitively bid highly clinical services
To find out who your elected representatives are, or how to contact them
by e-mail or letter, please visit the NAAOP website at
www.oandp.com/naaop.
But there is no substitute for speaking with your elected
representatives or their staff IN YOUR HOME STATE. Call your
Congressman and both Senators today in their district or state office.
If you have trouble locating the right phone numbers, contact the
Capitol Switchboard at 202-225-3121 (House) or 202-224-3121 (Senate).
Ask for your elected Member of Congress' district or state office's
phone number AND PLEASE MAKE THE CALLS! Thank you.
