EASTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY'S GRADUATE CERTIFICATE PROGRAMS IN
ORTHOTICS AND PROSTHETICS
ANNOUNCEMENT and PROGRAM OVERVIEW
On May 29th, 2003, Graduate Certificate Programs in Orthotics and
Prosthetics were granted full and final approval by the Office of
Academic Affairs at Eastern Michigan University. Classes will begin
September 2003. University Admissions is now officially accepting
applications.
Both programs are offered based on a unique partnership between Eastern
Michigan University's department of HPERD in the College of Education,
its College of Technology (composite and plastic materials), and the
University of Michigan's Orthotics and Prosthetics Center's (UMOPC)
chief administrator and certified practitioners.
Scheduled to accommodate working professionals and full-time students,
classes will be offered during evenings and on occasional Saturdays.
Fall (September 2003) scheduling will be posted on the websites
mentioned below which link to EMU's HPERD homepage
(www.emich.edu/coe/hperd/index.html).
Entrance Requirements
To be accepted into the program students must have obtained a minimum
cumulative grade point average for their undergraduate degree of 2.75 on
a 4.0 scale. Those who meet this requirement but who have not taken
certain undergraduate courses listed on the websites including human
anatomy, must complete these courses before they can be formally
admitted into either Graduate Certificate Program. Only exception to
this is the equivalent of EMU's ACCT 240 (Accounting 240), which must be
taken before students enter their final semester.
To obtain a Graduate Certificate in orthotics or prosthetics, students
must complete 31 credit hours with a 3.0/B average, which will take
approximately 15 months to complete.
Details of the programs, instructors, and updates are and will continue
to be posted on the www.oandp.com/ (EDUCATION, Developing Programs),
website until the information contained on this site can be replicated
on the HPERD homepage www.emich.edu/coe/hperd/index.html.

Explanation of ISP code
We will not receive an official code specifically for orthotics and

gain
admission into the program and to receive credit for
the orthotics and
prosthetics courses that they complete during the
Fall semester (September
2003 (see courses SPMD 591, PHED 596, and SPMD 591,

Fall 2003:Reminder to Undergraduate Students
Undergraduate students in the States of Michigan and Ohio
who have
completed 85 or more credit hours with a minimum cumulative grade point
average of 2.75, and who would like to learn more about the field of
orthotics and prosthetics as a profession, are permitted to take SPMD
580 (register for SPMD 591), and SPMD 581(register for PHED 596),in the
Fall of 2003 for undergraduate credit.
Textbooks, Lab Fees, Tool Kits for Fall 2003
Textbooks and coursepacks will be available for purchase at the McKenny
Student Union, EMU. Announcements regarding additional fees for those
courses that require materials and tools necessary for workbench
activities, will be announced on the websites.
Opportunity for Research
All students irrespective of their academic background and previous
work experience will be required to complete, present, and or publish, a
research project designed to improve their ability to evaluate product
efficacy, prior to graduation. All courses are designed to help conduct
research capable of making a significant pragmatic contribution to the
field,
and assist practitioners make informed decisions for the benefit of
their patients.
Program Sponsors/Partnerships with Industry
Presently we are negotiating with two well-respected international
companies.
One has already committed to supplying materials to support workbench
activities that form an essential part of instruction, the other is
interested in donating gait lab equipment for evaluating selected
patients and assessing the efficacy of existing and prototype product
design(s).
Accreditation
We are planning for NCOPE to visit campus for the purpose of obtaining
accreditation at the end of the Fall 2004 semester when the first
clinical courses will will have been completed. This will enable the
University to obtain valuable input from students concerning their
impression(s) of the program and address any issues NCOPE might have
concerning academic content of the program, methods of instruction,
student advising, record keeping, clinical affiliation sites, and other
administrative and facilitative issues.
Currently listed by NCOPE as a Developing Program, we are in the
process of completing the Self-Study Report required by NCOPE and CAAHEP
prior to the accreditation visit.
Future Plan
Master's Degree in Orthotics AND Prosthetics
In September 2003 we intend initiating the internal review process to
extend both Graduate Certificates into master's degrees in either
(1)orthotics and prosthetics, (2)orthotics, or (3) prosthetics depending
on the number of students who declare their intent to enter either of
the three programs. Although courses have already been written to
facilitate a choice of master's degree concentration, further discussion
by members of our Advisory Board will occur before a final decision is
made on the nature and content of an additional 12-14 credit hours of
study needed beyond either Certificate program to obtain the master's
degree and for those individuals applying who have completed their
Certificate programs at other institutions. We are hopeful that students
registered in either Certificate Program who wish to obtain a master's
degree in orthotics and prosthetics will be given the opportunity to
so.
Possible areas of concentration for the master's degree that we are
currently considering are CADM/FEA, materials and manufacturing,
psychology of the physically challenged, artificial intelligence and
intelligent prostheses/robotics, all incorporating research in a
well-equipped gait lab facility designed to optimize patient comfort and
investigate product efficacy.
Final approval of any master's degree typically takes 12-15 months to
obtain (September 2004/January 2005), following internal and external
review(s).
