The O&P community lost a special friend and an immense contributor to
the field when Ralph (Ronney) R. Snell, CPO, FAAOP died in Memphis,
Tennessee on Sunday morning. Although Ronney touched many lives across
this country, the staff and leadership of AOPA feel a special sorrow
because he was such integral part of our organization for over 30 years.
We will miss Ronney's guidance and insight on so many issues that are
critical to the field.

Ronney was a well-known and highly regarded practitioner in the O&P
field. During his decades-long career, Ronney served as president of
three major O&P industry organizations. He was president of ABC in
1969. He was instrumental in the organization of the American Academy
of Orthotists and Prosthetists and served as its first president in
1971. He led AOPA in 1974-1975 and was elected to another term as
president in 1998-1999.
Ronney received AOPA's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001 and the
Academy's Titus Ferguson Award in 2002. Among the many community groups
in which he held leadership positions were the Tennessee Rehabilitation
Association, the Easter Seals Society and the Mid-South Medical Center
Council.
Anyone familiar with Ronney is aware of his concern for children, and
since 1962 he worked actively with St. Jude's Children's Research
Hospital. He was known in the industry for his devotion to this cause
and he made donations to the Hospital as a gift to the AOPA board of
directors when he stepped down as AOPA President at the end of 1999.
Ronney's deep involvement, passion and dedication to the O&P field was
not surprising in light of the fact that he was the third generation of
Snells to practice O&P. We at AOPA extend our heartfelt sympathy to the
entire Snell family and to the many who called Ronney a friend.
