Original question:
Does anyone know the official word as to the use of E mail when
transmitting patient info., as in their name and diagnosis when
procuring a prescription? I suspect that it's not allowed unless it is
encrypted.

Responses (separated by a blank line)

I had the same question when I was at the Academy meeting and it was
answered by Bob Press's wife. She is an attorney that deals with HIPPA
issues and they had an exhibit at the Academy meeting. Regretfully I do
not have her business card with me.
She told me that using E-mail was legal and that the HIPPA reqs were
designed so that you could do business that way, but are often
misunderstood. This is the same reading we got here at the VA in a legal
opinion asked by Prosthetics.
Following is contact information for Bob.

According to the seminar I attended in San Diego it is not required in
the normal care of your patient, but probably advisable.

You are correct. Encryption is on the path to compliance.
