Call for Nominations for Director of the ABC Board of Directors
The American Board for Certification in Orthotics and Prosthetics, Inc. (ABC) invites the submission of nominations for appointment of two directors to the ABC Board of Directors. All nominations must be received by ABC no later than June 1, 2003.
The person appointed to this position will serve a term of four years, beginning on December 1, 2003, and will be entitled to all privileges, including the right to vote. A Nominee shall be an ABC certified practitioner in good standing and shall demonstrate a record of experience in participating in ABC programs. Such experience may include committee membership, accreditation surveyor or examiner activities.
All nominations, including those from a practitioner submitted on his/her own behalf, should be submitted to:

The duties and responsibilities of a director are listed below:
Role of the Director:
Role
As a voting member of the ABC board of directors participates in the general management affairs, business and concerns of the corporation. This includes participation in policy development and in the governance of the organization. In this capacity, a director participates in providing guidance and overall direction to the executive director and management staff in the execution of the organization's policies and programs.
Selection of Directors
The ABC board of directors consists of at least seven (7) persons, of whom no fewer than six (6) must be ABC Certified Orthotists, and/or ABC Certified Prosthetists, and/or Certified prosthetists/Orthotists in good standing; and at least one (1) Director shall be selected from the public. All directors are selected by the board of directors, from a list of recommended nominee(s) from the nominating committee.
Organizations and/or persons who have an interest in the affairs of the ABC may submit nominations for vacant positions on the board of directors. This may include trade associations, professional societies, consumer groups, or individual members or organizations of the profession.
Term of Office
A director serves for a period of approximately 4 years and is eligible for appointment to three consecutive terms.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
As an individual director, the incumbent derives his/her authority by participation in the collective actions and decisions of the board of directors. In this capacity the director:
1. Participates in the execution of the board of directors' fiduciary responsibilities to assure the sound financial and operational management and administration of the ABC and its programs.
2. Participates in the establishment of standards of quality and proficiency for the orthotic and prosthetic profession.
3. Participates in the establishment of standards of certification and other credentialing actions covering persons, corporations, partnerships, individuals or other entities operating as a firm or company engaged in the profession of orthotics and prosthetics.
4. At the discretion of the president, may serve as an ABC spokesperson to external entities for the purpose of promoting and articulating ABC policies and programs.
5. As determined by the board of directors, may serve as board liaison to one or more ABC committees. In this capacity, the director would serve as the principal medium between the board and the committee(s) to assure an effective linkage which supports the work of the committee.
6. As determined by the board of directors, may serve as a member or chairperson of committees, task forces or other work groups that are chartered with the oversight of ABC programs or the development of specific policies, procedures or initiatives.
7. Provides constructive contributions and works toward consensus on issues being addressed by the board of directors.
8. Participates in all regular and special meetings of the board of directors, at least three (3) of which are formal meetings conducted each year, plus telephone conference calls which are conducted on an as needed basis.
Qualifications
Except for Public Member directors, all directors should demonstrate a record of experience in participating in ABC programs. Such experience may include committee, accreditation surveyor or examiner activities.
Removal of a Director
1. A director may be removed from the board of directors for reasons of health, nonperformance or other actions deemed detrimental to the welfare of the corporation. Removal of a director may only be approved by a majority vote of the entire board of directors.
2. Vacancies caused by death, resignation or removal of a director in the board of directors shall be filled by the board. Directors so appointed shall hold office until expiration of the remaining term of office.
