THANK YOU FROM SAN DIEGO (PART 1 of 2)
Washington, DC – Thanks to our volunteers and every member of the
American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists (AAOP) who helped to
make the OPAF’s presence at the 2003 AAOP annual meeting in San Diego
such a success. The support we received will enable us to sustain our
program growth in 2003 and beyond. Thanks to everyone!
*“Fitness for Everyone” draws a crowd*
Through its partnership with Endolite North America, OPAF offered a very
successful “Fitness for Everyone” clinic in San Diego. A dozen
practitioners, including PTs, CPOs, and BOCPs, and over a dozen
amputees, ranging in age from 18 to 64, gathered with a host of family
members and exercise partners for the day-long program of stretching and
strengthening exercises created and led by three-time Paralympic track
and field champions Todd Schaffhauser and Dennis Oehler. Assisting Todd
and Dennis in their instruction were volunteers Sarah Noonan, PT and
Thomas Guth, CP. Thanks to everyone, including OPAF president Joel
Kempfer, CP, FAAOP, and OPAF directors Mike Burton and Chris Truskowski,
MS, PT for their help with program logistics. Thanks very much to
Endolite North America, to all practitioners and therapists, and to AAOP
and the O&P facilities that co-sponsored the event, including Scope
Orthotics & Prosthetics, Inc. and Bionics Orthotics & Prosthetics. Thank
you all for helping to give wings to the dreams of individuals who wish
to set their own life goals.
*Hole in one for OPAF*
On Wednesday, March 25, fifty golfers gathered at Riverwalk Golf Club to
participate in the Spring 2003 OPAF Golf Classic in support of OPAF’s
community service programs.
Thank you to our event sponsors - without all of you the outing would
not have been possible. Thanks to our hole sponsors for their
generosity: Becker Orthopedic, Boston Brace International, College Park
Industries, OPAF director Gay Molnar, Ohio Willow Wood, and Össur.
Thanks also to College Park Industries, Footcomfort, Ohio Willow Wood,
and Össur for their contributions to our gift bags. And thanks to OPAF
president-elect Don Hardin for his personal sponsorship of the beverage
cart.
In the competition, first-place honors went to the team of Rob Faught,
Tim Pansiera CO (OTS Corporation), Darren DcCosmo (Boston Brace
International), and Ralph Hooper, CPO (Carolina Orthotics and
Prosthetics, Inc.).
Kelliee Hercules hit the shortest drive, and Sheila Collier won the
closest to the pin contest for the women. Ralph Hooper won the closest
to the pin contest for the men. Scott Tracewell (Fabtech Systems LLC)
won the longest putt, and Frank Friddle (Friddle’s Orthopedic Appliances
Incorporated) won the straightest drive, sponsored by Boston Brace
International. Rudy Becker (Becker Orthopedic) won the men’s longest
drive, sponsored by Becker Orthopedic. Delores Boff won the ladies
longest drive, sponsored by OPAF director at-large Gay Molnar.
Congratulations everyone!
The Fund also extends thanks to all our event volunteers, Cindy Cowart,
OPAF director and chair of the OPAF golf classic planning committee Jim
Hughes, CP, OPAF president Joel Kempfer, CP, FAAOP, OPAF president elect
Don Hardin, and OPAF directors John Stephenson, CP and Chris Truskowski,
MS, PT.
Thank you everyone for helping to make the Spring 2003 OPAF Golf Classic
fun for everyone and successful for OPAF.
The Fall 2003 OPAF Golf Classic will be held during AOPA’s 2003 National
Assembly in Reno (October 22-25, 2003), at one of Reno’s finest courses.

individuals with physical disabilities - especially those served by
members of the orthotics and prosthetics community - to enjoy the
rewards of personal achievement, physical fitness, and social
interaction.
