Folks,
I am in need of some information and hopefully this venue might provide it.
I am trying to find out if there are any practicing orthotist that may be a
unilateral, upper extremity (transhumeral)
amputee who utilizes a prosthetic device on an everyday basis.
I know that this maybe an unusual request but it is something that I am
pursuing for a young Air Force orthotist who
recently became an upper extremity amputee due to an MVA while on leave
during the Christmas Holidays.
I take a special interest in this because this young man was a former
student of mine here at the Air Force School
for Orthotic Training several years ago. He is now a patient at this
facility.
He has suffered mental anguish (as well as the physical) with the knowledge
that the Air Force will start proceedings
to medically discharge him after he receives his prosthetist and trained in
its use. In many cases this is the
normal avenue of events with the military if one is not deemed an asset for
future assignments. I would like to see
this changed but there needs to be some proof that this is a possibile
reality and not just a desire.
The young man is still not healing as quickly as desired so his time line
for the prosthetist will be somewhat later than
expected.
Your response will be greatly appreciated no matter how small or large the
input. Just the fact that you
responded counts!
