Hello. The O&P EDGE is planning an article on working with
Spanish-speaking patients. The US Census Bureau has recently released
estimates showing that Hispanics now constitute the largest minority
group, comprising 13 percent of the US population, with blacks
comprising 12.7 percent of the population (the US population as a whole
has grown to 284.8 million in July 2001, up from 281.4 million as of
April 2000.)

As an O&P practitioner, have you seen an increase in the number of your
Hispanic patients? If you are not Hispanic yourself, how have you
adapted to cultural needs of these patients-or have you needed to? Do
you speak Spanish-or do you intend to learn? (Of course, many Hispanic
persons speak fluent English, and perhaps do not speak Spanish, if they
are US-born.)

Your experiences and comments are welcome. Please contact me at
<Email Address Redacted> or at the phone/fax numbers listed below.

Thanks for your help.

Regards,
