If you're still not in compliance with HIPAA Privacy Standards you may find what you need at the Academy's Annual Meeting in San Diego. Be sure to attend the Friday (March 21) afternoon session on EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW TO BE HIPAA COMPLIANT BY THE APRIL 14 DEADLINE.
This two-hour session will provide a step-by-step explanation of what you need to have in place to meet the privacy standards. Practices will have to develop notices of their privacy practices, create business associate contracts for vendors that receive protected health information, develop a privacy compliance program, have written policies to address patient privacy, train their staff, and take other steps to meet the Privacy Standards' obligations.
HELP IS ALSO AVAILABLE from the Academy in the form of a Model HIPAA Compliance Plan on CD-ROM and the corresponding Privacy Officer's Supplement notebook, an Academy exclusive. The model plan is complete with:
o The forms you will need to develop for your practice
o An explanation of the Privacy Standards, and
o Detailed policies and procedures to help ensure compliance.
You'll also receive:
o Text of the most important HIPAA regulations (e.g., the Privacy Standards, the Security Standards and the Transaction and Code Set Standards).
o Materials to assist with compliance, such as information on making minimum necessary determinations, dealing with business associates and understanding HIPAA preemption of state laws.
o Training materials for staff (including PowerPoint presentations) to assist in implementing a compliance project, including a sample HIPAA Privacy and Security Project Plan and relevant training materials.
o Information necessary for filing an Extension Compliance Plan in order to obtain a one year extension for compliance with HIPAA's Transaction and Code Set Standards.
The Model Compliance Plan is available to Academy members for $300 and the Privacy Officers Supplemental Notebook is $99. Both may be ordered from the Academy Bookstore (301) 617-7805.
