Kudos to the Joint Committee on O&P Awareness for their work in creating a one-stop website that contains everything a student might want to know about O&P to consider it as a career option. This is one of the many activities that is part of the Academy's Project Quantum Leap initiative.

You're invited to check it out at www.opcareers.org < <URL Redacted>>.

The website contains information on:
o Entering the profession
o What it takes (the ideal candidate)
o Educational Pathways: baccalaureate programs, certificate programs, schools, prerequisites, selection criteria, scholarships
o Practitioner profiles
o O&P technology
o Employment opportunities

The Joint Committee was formed in March at the Academy's Annual Meeting and quickly outlined a series of activities to ultimately increase the number of student applicants by 10%. Funding for the projects is expected to come from the Academy's government grant, O&P Education and Development Fund through the Project Quantum Leap initiative, and the Academy.

Among the activities to boost interest in the O&P profession are:
o color brochure about the profession to be sent to high school counselors pointing students to the website (copies are available from the Academy);

o demonstration project during the Academy's Annual Meeting in San Diego where high schools students are invited to hear a short presentation about O&P, are paired with college students from Cal State University-Dominguez Hills and Rancho Los Amigos, and tour the exhibit hall;

o creation of a slide presentation (PowerPoint) for practitioners (available from the Academy) that participate in local Career Fairs or job shadowing programs;

o work with the U.S. Dept of Labor to provide information about the profession for the Occupation Outlook Handbook and related electronic resources.

The Joint Committee is chaired by Academy Board member Wendy Beattie, CPO, FAAOP with representatives from each of the O&P organizations:
Joel Kempfer, CP, FAAOP - OPAF
Robin Seabrook -- NCOPE
Robert Lin, CPO, FAAOP - NAPOE
Scott Hornbeak, CPO, FAAOP - NAPOE
Charles Pritham, CPO, FAAOP - AOPA
Jan Stokosa, CP -- NAAOP
Thomas Coakley - ABC
