Medicare cancelled & Patient doesn't tell you

Has any one had an experience like this? A Medicare patient presents in your
office, a prescription, Medicare card and secondary insurance card requesting
the device. You know the patient because you have provided services for him
before. So, you dispense the device, the patient signs all the Medicare
required forms and he walks out the door. You send the bill to Medicare and
in 2 weeks you get a denial because the patient's insurance expired in Sept
and the date of service is Oct. I've been in this filed for 32 years and
I'vd never had this happen to me. When I called the patient, he said he
didn't know why that was denied and he would have his wife call me. It's over
a week and no one have called me yet!
Has this happened to you and what can I do? I know I have legal rights but I
would like to settle this and still have a patient. Does Medicare have any
guidelines on handling this problem?
