About two years ago a young amputee I had provided protheses too asked me
about the requirements to become a prosthetist. I explained all the
requirements to become an ABC certified prosthetist. I was then told Mr.
Mc Coy that's hard! To which I replied If it were easy, everyone would
do it. I also explained the BOC requirements. This individual is in
the junior year of the O & P bachelor of science degree program at the
University of Texas Health Science Center at Dallas and is determined to
achieve ABC certification in prosthetics and orthotics.
When you look at how many orthotists and prosthetists have achieved ABC
certification since 1948 when ABC started and compare that number to the
number of orthotists and prosthetists credentialed by BOC since it
started in the early 1980's, it becomes quite apparent that it is easier
to get a BOC credential than to achieve ABC certification. How else can
you explain the numbers? Ms. Duncan herself explained it was easier for
her to get the BOC credential for orthotist than to achieve ABC
certification in orthotics. This is not meant to be mean spirited or to
be a personal attack on Ms. Duncan. I applaud her for her achievements,
and I hope she continues.
I'm sure I will receive e-mail bashing me for these comments, but before
you hit the send button, think about what I have said. I did not say one
is better than the other (that is for each of us to determine for
ourselves, and I respect your opinion even if I disagree it). I did say
that it is EASIER to obtain a BOC credential in orthotics and/or
prosthetics than it is to obtain certification in orthotics and/or
prosthetics from ABC. I think most of you will agree with that statement
which I believe to be fact.
