Beneath the diatribe Jeffrey McDonald offers an often-overlooked observation
that there are indeed many prosthetists & orthotists who by virtue of
military services, family-related businesses and other avenues have
garnered invaluable experience and who practice on a par with other
credentialed professionals. That being said, I would offer a few points for
the original poster to consider:
    (1) There are several other organizations (BOC, NOMA, various allied
health professional groups, to name a few) with more money who have made
their presence known at the local and national level.
    (2) An economics major probably would not even consider entering this
field given the present economic climate. However, professionals who have
been in a comprehensive practice for several years (the craftsmen as
described) have other avenues for ABC certification available to them .The
ABC Unique Qualifications approach (
<URL Redacted> ) is one
way.
    (3) If asked, within the scope of prosthetic/orthotic practices, to make
a sandwich I would defer to one more qualified than I as PB & J is the
extent of my abilities!

The occasional sniping at others' credentials seen here and in other
forums may be therapeutic but not productive. Circumstances have placed all
of us on the same playing field as contemporaries with common problems and
issues. Let's spend our time and energies developing more cohesive responses
to those issues that impact us all.
