Mark,
I'm unsure why you are having difficulties contacting me. I read of your
inquiry on the O&P Listserve.
Please respond with a fax number and Ill send you some printed info
regarding the reconstructive and primary procedure.
The Ertl Procedure:Beyond the Bridge film(s) will be ready for distribution
in December.
We will notify you and approximately 300 others whom have made inquiries,
when it is available for distribution and how it can be obtained.
Although the prosthetic industry has made significant advances over the past
40 years, pain is still a common feature in many lower extremity
amputees.Pain may originate from a number of areas and structures including
bone, muscle, nerve, blood vessels and skin. These painful systems will usually
lead to significant disability, difficulty with daily activities, and
decreased ability to wear the prosthesis.
I'm also unsure of how any vascular surgeon can properly perform the
correct Ertl procedure when he has not had access to the details nor the
knowledge or education of bone grafting.
The procedure can be applied to both transtibial and transfemoral surgeries
and other amputated areas with open medullary canals. The basic principals
for transtibial amputations can be applied to transfemoral amputees as well,
however only one bone is involved as the medullary canal is covered with a
flexible bone graft.
The lack of proper knowledge and applications by surgeons, vascular and
orthopedic, is why the procedure is sometimes controversial and often
improperly labeled an Ertl when it is not performed correctly by
unknowledgeable surgeons.
This is the primary motivation behind the Barr Foundations production of
these videos.
It is our contention that orthopedic surgeons need gain the knowledge of the
benefits of this procedure and once again perform this reconstructive
procedure which has been successfully performed since 1920.
When was the last time a vascular surgeon you know operated with a bone
chisel?!!
Thank you for your inquiry.
