International Day of Disabled Celebrated by Disabled Afghans in Jalalabad Afghanistan.
A Bicycle & wheelchair race was conducted by AABRAR in connection of the International Day of Disabled with the financial assistance from Medico international, Caritas Germany and Diakonie Emergency Aid in Jalalabad, Afghanistan. Because of the Ramadan (The Muslim Holy Month of Fasting) the event was held on 30th October 2002 instead of 3rd December. International Day of Disabled was also celebrated by the disabled women and girls on 4th November 2002 on a separate manner where a large number of women working in other aid giving organizations including the disabled women and girls themselves attended the event.
A total of 130 cyclists with physical disabilities have attended and participated in the bicycle race. The disabled competitors almost come from 10 Afghan provinces where our Peshawar based disabled cyclists couldn't come because of the closer of the Pak Afghan border.
It should be pointed out here that a total of 16 couldn't participate in the bicycle race because of the medical reasons, although they had a chance to to attend the awarding ceremony and share their experienced with other fellows disabled.
The disabled cyclists were latter on divided into six groups (i.a. below knee, Above knee, children with bilateral amputations, Wheelchair riders and children A and B groups have actively participated in the race.
The destination for competition was different for each category of the disabled competitors while the measurement of the destinatoin was carried out before the bicycle race.
Prizes awarded to the winners of first, second and third position winners of each category. The first winner in each category got a Chines made Bicycle, second position got Sewing machine while others who secured third position were awarded with Wall Clocks, and hand clocks . A total of ? prizes for the first, winners in each category were provided by ICRC.
Thousands of spectators including women,children and people from all walks of life have watched the disabled competitors during the race.

Beside other the Assistant Governor of Ningarhar Dr.M.Asif Qazi Zada had attended the awarding ceremony and has given a speech in support of disabled persons.
