Dear List,
Thank you for the dozens of responses to my query.
The overwhelming advice was to use alginate. Further to that I received some
interesting advice to preparing the pipe for safe removal of the impression
without pulling out or breaking the alginate. Some of these were: wrapping
the pipe with tape (I assume double faced) or drilling holes in the pipe to
add material (doweling) in a crosswise pattern. All recommended wrapping with
plaster bandage immediately before shrinkage can occur. Some recommended
leaving the wrapped impression sit over night to allow shrinkage, then easily
pulling the alinate out.
Thank you to all those who took the time to help!
