Last Chance to File for HIPAA Compliance Extension
All O&P companies are reminded that the deadline for filing for a one-year
extension to meet the requirements of the Administrative Simplification
provisions of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act
(HIPAA) is fast approaching. If you are a covered entity, you must either
be in compliance by Tuesday, October 15, 2002, or file for a one-year
extension. Covered entities include all providers of services, suppliers,
health plans, and clearinghouses that submit health information in
electronic format.
Electronic filing is the fastest way to secure your extension, and you will
have the security of receiving a confirmation number electronically. You
will be asked a few simple questions about the reasons for requesting an
extension, your budget, level of HIPAA awareness, and testing status.
You can file for an extension on-line by going to the OPGA website at
www.opga.com and clicking on the HIPAA One Year Compliance Form &
Instructions link and following the directions. Or, you may call Sue at
OPGA (800-214-6742) and we will guide you through the process of filling out
the form.
If you mail your extension application, make sure that it is postmarked by
October 15.
