Hi

I've been asked to offer bracing information regarding a complete tear
(NYD) of the intertendon connective tissue between the 3rd and 4th extensor
digitorum on a patients right hand. Injury occurred 12 hours ago and the
patient reports hearing a loud rip followed by a sharp pain and then
relatively little pain. During the injury the patient's index finger was in
neutral position while fingers 3,4,5 were in a tight fist. (Patient was
opening a window on a school bus). Assessment reveals patient capable of
fully extending and flexing of all the fingers but a very obvious mass
between the 3rd and 4th MCP. Pain is relieved by placing hand in a neutral
position. This fellow is an accomplished bagpiper and as you would expect
an injury like this if untreated properly would/could compromise his
musical instrument playing. There has been no surgical intervention to this
point but my feeling is that it really is indicated. If anyone has any
further information/advice about this condition could you please email me
as soon a possible?

TIA
