Are you HIPAA compliant yet? These two dates are important to you:
OCTOBER 15, 2002: The compliance date for the Transaction and Code Set Standards is currently October 16, 2002. However, most covered entities may obtain a one-year extension before they will be required to comply if they file a Compliance Extension Plan with HHS on or before October 15. Covered entities who fail to file a plan and are not in compliance risk the possibility of exclusion from Medicare.
APRIL 14, 2003: Most covered entities must comply with the HIPAA Privacy Standards by April 14, 2003. The standards require covered entities to evaluate their current information management practices and implement many policies and procedures relating to the use and disclosure of patient health information. They also require covered entities to afford patients certain rights with respect to their health information and implement necessary administrative procedures designed to preserve the confidentiality of patient health information.
If you're confused or in doubt as to whether this applies to you, we encourage you to file the extension form.
You can obtain a FREE copy of the Compliance Extension Plan form from the Academy by calling Bethany Oxer (703) 836-0788, ext 206 or emailing <Email Address Redacted> <mailto:<Email Address Redacted>>. Included will be an informative article to help you complete the form. The form is also available at www.cms.hhs.gov/hippa/hipaa2/ascaform.asp < <URL Redacted>> and can be completed online.
