From a consumers perspective, I too must agree with Mr.Howell' s comments below.
The FAOP membership, which has grown considerably in numbers since state regulation was enacted, would be more productive if they suggested and actually participated in supporting and improving the current regulation oversight system than complaining about its short comings and the dues they have to pay their lobbyist to retain themselves as a professional association.
Recognition of any professional designation is not free. Only a handful of FAOP members actually advocated for the law and continue to spend countless hours of their own time to support it and participate in its growing pains .
The formation of a state board approved discipline review committee would certainly help put teeth in the non compliance issues that some members complain and addressed to me at last weekends meeting.
The law is new and has growing pains, but it is a law that was and is crucial to provide credibility to you as a professional and in delivering comprehensive O&P services, not to mention it enabled six other states to use it a model for their own regulation efforts.
Whiners usually expect a free ride but there is no free lunch for anyone.
Follow FAOP member Hugh Panton's cue, which he stated at the state licensure portion of last weekends FAOP meeting, for all members to attend the state board meetings and get involved in maintaining your state professional designation.
Incidentally, I was glad to see those Licensed designations on everyone's name badges this year.
Congratulations, you have earned the recognition but it will take everyone's participation to retain and perfect it.
