Limited choice of providers is one of the shortfalls for consumers re: the competitive bidding proposal for reimbursement from Medicare/Medicaid comprehensive O&P services.
Another pitfall to think about is the competitive bidding initiative may not take in consideration the qualifications or lack of qualifications of the providers whom will be providing these services and bidding for the lucrative contracts.
You may have no choice in whom would providing your future O&P health care services regardless of their qualifications, experience or educational requirements.
Every consumer wants affordability but not at the risk of receiving less than qualified services.
Perhaps the US legislation should be examining the industry's justification of R&D factors in the cost that are really one of the main culprits of out of reach coverage or no benefits altogether.
The other is that because the profession remains generally unregulated (in 43 states and federally) and there is no accountability to providers of less than qualified O&P services. As a result, third party payers eliminate or severally restrict coverage for O&P health care services.
I think it rather interesting that the competitive bidding proposal is on the table now and before the outcome of the Negotiated Rules Committee Hearings is determined .The Neg Reg hearings were scheduled to be held to recommend and determine provider qualifications for O&P services in order to qualify for Medicare reimbursement.
If this initiative was passed today, what national provider do you think would must likely win the contract(s)?
A independent provider or a chain of 600 plus facilities ? You may not have the choice !!
As a consumer advocate , I would suggest consumers and practitioners contact your US Senator by calling the Capitol Switchboard at 202-224-3121. If you are a amputee contact ACA 1-888-267-5669, whom represents themselves as the national amputee organization, to rally their formal opposition to the competitive bidding initiative.
I would also strongly suggest that O&P professionals join and support the National Association For the Advancement of Orthotics and Prosthetics (NAAOP) 1-800-622-6740 whose Call For Action efforts along with other organizations have had some successes in convincing members of the Senate that competitive bidding will be detrimental to patient health care.

Can somebody please explain what is meant by the line below from T. Barr's posting. It would seem that competitive bidding would lower the price of prosthetics and related services. Is there something wrong with that ? I don't understand the concept of something being wrong with lower prices, please explain.
