The following is posted on the National Association of Orthopedic Technologists website.
Under the heading of Message Board. This is the national organization representing the folks that make plaster fracture casts.
It is interesting that ABC's Board, through Lance Hoxie, shares the NAOT view of things. First AOPA surrenders to BOC and now ABC doesn't see any conflict of interest with NAOT. What is the world coming to?
Also note that NAOT is seeking a seat on the CMS rule making board. I guess they figure if the Feds are handing out qualifications why not grab some. You may want to send a comment to the conveners.

President's Message
Michael Gill, OTC, OT/SC
I am happy to report that as we prepare for the 20th Annual Clinical Symposium in Washington D.C., the state of the Nationa Association of Orthopaedic Technologists is stable and healthy. It has been a banner year for this association and we have made remarkable inroads in our quest to increase recognition of our profession. We've increased membership by more than ten
percent (we can do better), and we've parlayed our work to create alliances with other professional organizations, such as the National Association of Orthopaedic Nurses, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the Orthopaedic Physicians
Association, the Bones Society, and the ABC Board. Constructive dialogue with these organizations will ensure that NAOT continues on its successful path.
This past February, I asked the Marketing Committee Chair, Cindy Henderson, to attend the Committee of Allied Health Professionals Meeting during the AAOS Annual Conference. Cindy attended and secured NAOT a position on the OT1 program at the 2003 AAOS Meeting. This will be the first time in the 68 year history of the AAOS that the National
Association of Orthopaedic Technologists will be a presenter at this meeting. What a coup! I encourage all NAOT members that will be attending the 2003 Academy meeting in New Orleans, to please make an effort to attend NAOT's OT1 presentation.
On February 5, 2002, I flew to Washington, D.C. to meet with Lance Hoxie, the Executive Director of the ABC Board of Prosthetic and Orthotic. At that time, I presented him NAOT's scope of practice and discussed with him the O&P issues that have been permeating throughout the country. I am happy to report to you that the ABC board shares the NAOT point of view. We agreed that these two professions do not have a conflict of interest. He has agreed to attend our Annual General Business Meeting in Washington, D.C., to address this subject. Again, I encourage all members to attend this meeting.
In May, I spoke with Ira Lobel, a Federal Mediator with the Federal Registry, that will be conducting the CMS Rule Making Hearing in Washington, D.C. in Fall 2002. I requested a seat and position on this committee for NAOT. I was informed that there are seats available and that I would be notified of their decision. This meeting is open to the public, so rest assured that
NAOT will be there in some form or fashion. I call on all NAOT members to be the eyes and ears of the association.
