US-Politics: Medicare Reforms Still Include Competitive Bidding

Despite efforts of the O&P community to squelch discussions by lawmakers
about competitive bidding, AOPA's staff lobbyist has determined that
competitive bidding for orthotic services is still being considered by House
lawmakers. The good news is, many lawmakers have taken a closer look at the
O&P industry's competitive bidding concerns in recent days primarily due to
the active lobbying efforts of AOPA and our members' grassroots efforts.

Two important House committees are expected to consider a competitive
bidding proposal as part of their work on a Medicare reform package as early
as next week. Competitive bidding has been offered by the Bush
administration and lawmakers from both parties as a way to trim Medicare
spending.

AOPA continues its work on Capitol Hill to press for a complete exclusion of
orthotic services from any competitive bidding proposal. (Competitive
bidding for prosthetic services has never been considered as part of any
House Medicare package.)
