Original posting:

Patient is a 18 month old girl that has a skin cell disorder causing
exfoliating or blisters. As a result of this chronic disease in which large
bullae and erosions result slight mechanical trauma.

The prescription is for special shoes of soft leather that reduce friction
and trauma. Custom shoes do not seem a practical idea for a child because of
growth and funding restraints.

Does anyone have experience with this condition. We are thinking about shoe
inserts or special socks.

Summary of replies:

1. Apply ShearBan to shoes.

2. Use blister protective socks such as hikers use.

3.Try fleece lined moccasins

4. Booty type SMOs with lamb's wool liner.

5. Plastazote shoes with cloud soling with perforations and lining along
with socks. Change socks often to keep skin as dry as possible.

6. Contact Ammanath Peethambaron, C.P.O. at U of Michigan Orthotics and
Prosthetics 73r-973-2400 for design of FO that reduces sheer and abrasion.

7. Spenco inserts and double socks.

8. Comfort products Pedixstatic AFO liner socks with silver antimicrobial
fibers to promote healing of existing sores.

Mother is willing to buy shoes as Medicaid does not cover them. I have
referred to the Minnetonka Moccasin company where she can mail order them. I
will give them the antimicrobial socks to try as well.
