FLORIDA O&P BOARD FINES ORTHOPEDIC TECHNOLOGIST $3000.00
Fri., March 1st..An Orlando Orthopedic Technologist with 30 years
experience (20 years working at the same Orthopedic practice) was fined
$3000.00 today by the Florida O&P Board after he admitted he was applying
fracture casts to patients. The Orthopedic Technologist applied for an
orthotic fitter license on the advice of an Orlando licensed orthotist who
the OTs practice refers patients.
Upon questioning from the Board members and from his written application,
the OT admitted he has been applying casts for thirty years and thought he
was doing the right thing by applying for the license because the Orthotist
told him everyone needs to be licensed.
The Board informed the OT that he was practicing without a license (a third
degree felony) and the he was going to be fined $3000.00 and he and his
practice (four Orthopedic Surgeons) were being referred for investigation by
ACHA, the state dept. of health investigative branch for violation of the
law.
The Board further stated that because the state legislature was not made
aware of Orthopedic Technologists (over a thousand work in the state
compared to about 200 licensed orthotists) when the Florida O&P statutes
were passed, there is no provision in the law for Orthopedic Technologists
so it is also illegal to work as an OT in the state of Florida in their
normal scope of practice, the application of fracture immobilization
techniques through casting, bracing, splinting & traction. The OT was given
the address of the nearest MacDonalds for re-training.
The Orthopedic Technologist asked that if he never applied for this license
would anything ever have happened? The Board responded that they will
eventually root out all Orthopedic Technologists in the state of Florida and
export them to Georgia, Alabama & Canada
So, beware, all you dirty Orthopedic Technologists. You OTs that are now
in Gitmo or serving in Afghan or Saudi. Or maybe at sea on a carrier or a
hospital ship protecting our country. You better not come to Florida and
think you can work here. The other 49 states are OK to work in but not here
in Florida. We got the brace police and were looking for you.
Just a thought. Do you think the Orlando Orthotist will ever get any more
patients from this Orthopedic Practice? Or for that matter, any of the
ortho practices that employ Orthopedic Technologists.
