To Marty and the rest of the subscribers,

Regarding the dissemination of viruses through the listserv:

Viruses are NOT being spread through the OANDP-L Listserv. What is
happening is that the viruses are being spread through individual's
email programs when the message is sent to all the people in their
contacts list. A few of the more popular email programs will
automatically place the email address of the sender of messages into the
contacts list. Basically, even if you leave the listserv you are still
susceptible to viruses from all the individuals who you have ever sent
mail to.

With the spread of so many new viruses, it is important to be more
diligent than ever. The general rules of caution apply. DON'T open any
attachments that you are not completely sure of. When in doubt, contact
the sender. Install an updated virus protection software package on
your system.

Basic Questions:

Q. Can a virus be sent through the listserv?
A. No. Viruses are typically sent as attachments, and the oandp-l
listserv will NOT allow attachments to be sent through the system.

Q. Why do I sometimes get viruses sent to me from people who are on the
listserv?
A. Some viruses attack contact lists of people's email programs, some
viruses attack the person's 'inbox'. If you are in anyone's contact
lists or inbox, there is a chance that you may be sent a virus by
someone else who is also on the listserv. Just because it is sent to
you does not mean that you are infected by it, unless you open the
attachment.

Q. Is there any way to avoid getting viruses?
A. Yes. Do not open attachments unless you are completely sure of what
they are.

Q. What do I do if someone sends me a virus?
A. Don't open it, just delete it. Then empty your email 'deleted items'
folder, or 'recycle bin' to permanently delete the files.

Q. Then what happens?
A. If you did not open the attachment, nothing will happen. In case you
are still concerned, run your virus scanning software on your entire
system.

Q. Can I send a virus if I am not affected by one?
A. Yes. If you forward an email message that has a virus attached to
it, you can put someone else at risk. DO NOT forward a message that has
an unknown attachment file.

Q. Is there any way that I can completely eliminate the risk of having a
virus sent to my computer?
A. Yes. Stop using email and the Internet.

I hope that helps. If there are any more specific questions, please
direct them to me and I will do my best to answer them.

How are these viruses getting through? I thought the list did not allow
attachments.
