Colleagues: The recent NY TImes article on Curtis Grimsley, the
transfemoral amputee who made it down 70 flights of stairs at the World
Trade Center on 9/11 on his Otto Bock C-Leg, has sparked interest in
computers in prosthetics. NBC (Tom Brokaw and Science Medical reporter Bob
Bazell) will be doing a brief story on computers in prosthetics on Monday,
1/14 on the national news, 6:30 - 7:00 eastern time.
Yesterday, NBC did an interview with Mr. Grimsley. Today, they have been
filming here at the Center for Orthotic Prosthetic Care at Duke University
Medical Center. This afternoon they will film some of our patients using
computer controlled/enhanced prostheses. We have a client/patient who is a
bilateral transfemoral (R KD, L TF) amputee who is in the early part of her
rehab and is using C-Legs and she will be featured. Also, one of our young
children who uses the Animated Prosthetics computer myoelectric system will
be shown.
We hope we provide a nice and professional reflection of this great
profession we are all in and we hope you all get a chance to view the news
show. They are budgeting or planning about two minutes for the feature,
one minute with Mr. Grimsley and one minute here at Duke.
Again, Monday, January 14, NBC Nightly National News, at 6:30 - 7:00.
Best Regards,
