Derek,
I'm not sure you want a real response to your DAFO question. Your post
seemed to ask a question and immediately answer it with your own opinion.
You also seem very proud of your way of doing things and that's good, after
all, we should all be proud that we are trying to help others as best we can.
I used to make everything I cast for 16 years ago when I started as an
orthotist. I used to also type on a manual typewriter and eat a lot more
fatty foods. My point is things change, sometimes for good, sometimes not. I
really miss the fatty foods. Cascade DAFO can be a tool, just like any
central fab. I use them a lot, I also use Spinal Technology, and Boston
Brace, as well as our more local central fab. Sometimes I'll need to fill and
modify my cast before central fab gets it, sometimes not. If you work with
these groups of people, they will do their best to please you, and make you
want to come back for more. After all, these are people like you, that enjoy
making braces in a shop.
Cascade DAFO makes a great product for children w/ spastic CP. It is their
specialty, and they have a redo policy that is second to none. These folks
want it done right as much as we do and will redo a project for free to get
it right. I'm not saying it is the only way, but for me, as a tool, they have
been great. The Physical Therapists who work very closely with these children
are very happy with the Cascade DAFOs, and they could easily use any of the
other local orthotists who do not use Cascade DAFO in my densely populated
area.
Of course there are some projects I will not send away, I'll do as much
myself as possible, but if I think any of the specialty central fabs can do
the same or a better job, I'll use them.
Good luck, and stay proud of your work,
