I just read a post from <Email Address Redacted> dated 11/09/01 re:
Afghanistan and the US's involvement there.
Although I do not agree with this Listserve being used as a forum for this
type of back and forth political bantering, as a proud American and one who
has a nephew involved in a special operations unit in Operation Enduring
Freedom, I was really disturbed with his/her dissertation on the many
casualties of this war in Afghanistan.
I particularly take exception to his/her statements on how this war is
different than the two old ones they've experienced and indicates it's due
to:
1. heavy bombardment on the civilian
2. using more sophisticated war weapons
3. still the target is innocent people
This person obviously sees the US war on terrorism through much different
eyes, but is still badly mistaken. The US has made our position clear over
and over, innocent civilians are not targets and we have not been bombing
civilian areas. Have there been a few inadvertant strikes and caused
civilian deaths and injuries, of course. We don't deny that. Weapons
misfire, coordinates can be entered incorrectly and loss of civilian lives
can result. We have apologized for that. But they are not our target. We
all know how differently this war would be fought if they were.
I, for one, feel this is a form of propaganda and I don't think it shoud be
tolerated on this Listserve.
