Hello,
I am a Masters student at the University of British Columbia, Canada. I am
performing research on an EMG controlled powered orthosis to prevent
musculoskeletal disorders of the hand. The proposed actuator for this
device is an air muscle (also known as McKibben actuator). I know that an
orthosis similar to the one I describe was used in the 1960s by the Rancho
Los Amigos Hospital for people with paralysis; however, I do not know if
these are still in use or where to obtain one.
Since my research is more focused on the EMG control of the device, I am
looking to purchase the device to use as a platform. The basic idea for the
device is an air muscle (or pair of air muscles) will be used to close the
hand to supplement the grip force of the user.
I am new to the world of orthotics and would appreciate any help finding
such a device or a device that can be easily modified to use air muscles.
Thanks,
Greg Forrest
