Gary- Although, you have indicated, via prior e-mail that you are not a USA
certified prosthetist and operating as a prosthetist in South Africa, your
family has been in the O&P business for over 55 years.
I will assume the amputee,Keith MacDonald is also located in Africa .
Our organization has specific quidelines for our funding. We cannot solicit
just drop expensive donated components in the mail!
I would like to attempt follow up to your request once you have suggested a
viable method of shipment and an funding application has been submitted.
Successful shipments of donated supplies are difficult to make to the
region.
Secondly, your request will have to include the name of the manufacturer and
contact # or e-mail address of the component you requested. You will also
have to request and complete an application from us by writing or e-mailing
United Amputee Services Association for approval/disapproval.
Even though the need is high in South Africa, USA amputees, whom have no
other financial sources, are provided first priority for our funding.
We process about 50 domestic requests a month and fund the prosthetic
rehabilitation of approx.150 thru sponsoring prosthetist annually. We have
had approx 90 sponsors to date for 509 amputees.
We work directly with Rotary Clubs for oversight and delivery in third world
and developing countries.
They help overcome obstacles in custom and duties.
Perhaps you can contact their local club for assistance and help from us.
Once your professional credentials have been established, the application
completed reviewed and approved we would like to consider helping your
patient providing we can receive the donation or discount consideration to
our organization..
Are you charging the patient any $$ to the recipient for the fabrication,
assembly and fitting of this replacement prosthesis?
Our funding disallows the form of any other of payment.
Whom is to pay for the cost of shipment of the Mauch knee unit to Africa if
it can be donated by an individual or manufacturer? Shipping alone can cost
as much as $400-600 and there can often difficulty getting components to its
intended destination safely. We are responsible to our donors and our
accoutable to them.
I am addressing this e-mail to also toOANDP-L subscribers whom may want to
make the donation of the unit to the Barr Foundation to receive a tax
benefit, or provide a used one.We can specifically target the component for
your patient's rehabilitation once the other concerns(above) and application
have been addressed.
