Dear List,
I want to thank those who are expressing their sympathy with those in the US
and in New York specifically. It is heartening to know that many outside
the US borders feel for us and wish to offer comfort.
I think most US citizens regard the attacks on the World Trade Center and
the Pentagon as acts of war. While our attackers may have some legitimate
complaints, these acts of aggression do not entitle these aggressors to a
forum to air their complaints. I feel that the list, out of respect to the
US, should not post messages that seek to justify these acts of aggression
as I feel this lends legitimacy to these methods of terror. As a member of
the Advisory Board of O and P online, I feel that posts offering
explanations or justifications of the terrorists' motives should be
censored. I do not believe O and P online is the proper place for such a
discussion.
Likewise, I think it is important not to jump to conclusions that we know
who the perpetrators are or what causes they espouse. The organizations
that have sponsored these crimes have curiously shown reluctance to reveal
themselves.
I do feel that we should vigorously reject targeting any particular
individuals simply because they are of a certain ethnicity or faith. In
specific, the Arab world and Muslim world are each vast. We should not
presume complicity of specific governments at this point, nor attach
responsibility to our colleagues, friends, and neighbors who are still
deserving of our respect and courtesy.
Thank you for your attention,
Sincerely,
Charles E. Levy, MD
