Here are the responses I received with suggestions for bracing/controlling
knee hyperextension.
Tania
Townsend Design here in the U.S. makes a very good custom
hyperextension/recurvatum knee orthosis.
P. Rieth, CPO
Take a look at the Camp CHECK brace - available from Gilbert & Mellish in
the UK.
Try the CHECK ...KO from Camp. Very comfortable and light.
Bob Bangham, C.O., L.O.
Corpus Christi, Texas, US
Check out her ankle position during gait. I bet her ankle dorsiflexors are
not very strong!
You may wish to try an AFO - to maintain plantargrade ankle postion,
initially. This should have some beneficial effect, however you may have to
try a SKAFO, depends on the severity of deformity.
Check muscle strength in hamstrings & quads?
Please respond should you have any additional questions.
Cheers
Steve Kelly.

try the check hyperextension orthosis from Camp. Very slimline and light,
almost like the Swedish knee cage of years gone by. If you need info on my
website there is a picture and link to the brace.
Make a custom knee cage with adjustable
knee jts(McMills, Barry)
Townsend has a Drop Lock KO which is custom fabricated via cast mold. I
have used these on patients with severe recurvatum. The brace itself has a
heavy drop lock hinge and as far as fit, I have had no problems.

Is there any other involvement besides the hyperextension? If there are
involvements at the foot/ankle or hip, will a KO be adequate to address the
issue?
Brian Johns
I have had excellent results using a Townsend custom KO on this type of
patient. Bill DeToro,CO
Camp sell a lightweight knee orthosis that might be acceptable. It is called
the heck Forte, Model 8660. It has posterior recurvatum straps.

i have used floor reaction afo's to control knee hyperextension when the doc.
orders KAFO' . because with these you can control the ankle also . debbi
bencomo , orthotist
try using a custom DJ Defiance KO on her . I tried that on a
slender post-polio gentleman with severe knee recurvatum and it worked
very well. Sincerely, Pete DiPaolo, CPO, CT, USA
I had a similar situation a little while ago with a slendy
gentleman , post-polio. He had a hyperextension at the knee ~ 25
degrees.. I used a custom DJ Defiance KO on him and he liked the way it
fit and it was effective . Try it out. Sincerely, Pete DiPaolo, CPO

Many knee orthoses claim to work for just such a person, but often
suspension is a problem for a very slender leg with very little to no
calf developement. Rotation is often a problem too. Have you tried any
knee orthoses on her? If the above mentioned problems exist, then the
KAFO will probably be your only solution. The lady may very well refuse
to wear it and may just have to live with her condition until she
accepts the KAFO as the only solution to pain free ambulation.
Good Luck
