Dear O and P world,
I am sure that all of you know who Aspen is, although does anyone know
what they are up to? A distributor of Aspen, Medical Devices, who is
employed directly by Aspen is marketing HCA for contracts. To my knowledge,
he has already succeeded in Nashville, TN with a HCA hospital (Centennial
Medical Center). Basically he has cut off the O and P offices, by going
after the material management department of the hospital. He is not only
contracted for Aspen products to be utilized in the hospital exclusivly, but
all orthoses ordered by the physician, items he does not provide. From the
material management department, the order goes to the Aspen sales rep (who I
have met and she has absolutely no idea about treating Pt's) to fill the
order. Apparently, the MM dept. wants to use one company and the sales reps
have lured them in and signed on for an exclusive contract. They are
attempting to push the LSO's and TLSO's of Aspen, and remove the custom
fitted or custom designed orthoses. We all know that there NO off the self
orthosis that is better than a custom, there are appropriate times to use
them, but Medical Devices have displayed several 'studies' performed by Aspen
to the HCA department to refute that case.
I do not know about you, but this seems to cut throat tactics by a
sales rep. The owner of Medical Devices (Louisville, KY) and his rep are
taking the place of the orthotist and bill the hospital or insurance. I am
going to turn this hospital into HCA as a violation of patient services. A
non-practitioner is providing orthotic management to pt's in the hospital.
Have you experianecced anything of this magnitude? If so what did you do
about it? Thank you in adavnce.
