Advanced Instructional Course:
Lower Limb Orthotic Prescription
via Oregon Orthotic Systems Theory
October 12-13, 2001
University of New South Wales
Sydney, Australia
Course description
The aim of this course is to provide advanced instruction in lower
limb orthotic prescription, design and casting. The course emphasises
consideration of transverse plane mechanics and ground reaction force
manipulation. Prescription of orthoses for foot, ankle and knee
pathology will be covered. Course content will be useful when
managing people after cerebral palsy, poliomyelitis infection, CVA,
spinal trauma or other conditions affecting the lower limbs.
The first day will involve presentation of theory and will be useful
for orthotists, and referrers to orthotic services, who wish to
improve their understanding of orthotic biomechanics. The second day
will provide orthotists with practice assessment, orthotic
prescription and casting techniques. A certificate of attendance
will be awarded to participants for use in Continuing Professional
Education programs.
Course presenters
The keynote speaker is Mr Kyle Scott from Oregon Orthotic Systems,
USA. Mr Scott is an orthotist with years of experience in orthotic
management of people with spinal cord injury, head injury, and post
poliomyelitis infection. Mr Scott is now employed by Oregon Orthotic
Systems (OOS) as an educator and has extensive experience in
delivering this course material. Mr Darren Pereira, Chief Orthotist
and Prosthetist from St. Vincent's Hospital, Melbourne, will assist
Mr Scott during the practical components of the course. Mr Pereira
completed an extensive OOS prescription course in the United States
and applies OOS theory in his management of patients.
