I have just finished reading the July 13th minutes of the Florida O&P Board
meeting on their web site.
On page 6&7 of the minutes, it states that doctors cannot delegate the the
practice of orthotics to any unlicensed individual in their office.
That means they can't tell the Orthotech to go put on a cast walker to that
5th metatarsal fracture or even a wrist support to that 6 week post
fractured radius. I guess since they can't put the wrist support on they
certainly can't apply the initial cast either. Or for that matter, what
about an emergency room. Can a PCT or CNA or a MA apply a wrist splint to a
fracture in an ER? According to the O&P Board they can't.
Another question is, can a brace be made for a Florida resident by an
unlicensed orthotist outside the State? If you have to be licensed to take
a measurement surely you should be licensed to make it and sell it in
Florida?
On page 7, the board forwarded an Orthopedic Surgeon for investigation by
the AHCA (who ever they are) because he alllowed an unlicensed individual to
apply supports in his office. His name is Dr. Francisco Carmona. The only
member of the board to vote against this was Dr. Dennis Grogan, an
orthopedic surgeon who is a member of the O&P Board. Being a CA
orthotech, I am watching this very closely because of future O&P laws in CA.
I think the Florida O&P Board is about to get a wake-up calll from the
Florida Orthopedic Surgeons. With this orthopedic surgeon being referred
for investigation they awoke the 1500 orthopedic surgeons in Florida.
They were unaware that this law was passed.
Now it is the biggest blimp on the radar screen. Now Orthopedic Surgeons
will have to look at Florida Orthotists (if an Orthotist knows the Doc
employs an Orthotech, the Orthotist has to report the Doc by law) in a
different way, The Florida Orthotists are The Nazi Brace Police.
